Streaming Kino: The Alpha Incident (1978)

Great low-fi sci-fi thriller with a "Night Of The Living Dead"-ish touch. 

This unobtrusive little gem has a lot of things in common with George A. Romero's brilliant "Night Of The Living Dead" (1968). There are no undead in "The Alpha Incident", and it's not an actual horror movie, but the premise, the setting, and the tone are quite similar. A group of people are confined to an isolated house, threatened by an omnipresent external hazard, dictated by higher powers, and tensions among the group are rising.

A microorganism brought home from Mars is only the beginning. "The Alpha Incident" is mostly a psychological thriller, an intimate play with a horror-feel, that reveals the darker, and some of the darkest, corners of the human soul. How would you hold up if you were deprived of sleep for prolonged amounts of time, have nowhere to go, and slowly begin to realize that decisions far beyond your control are being made?

Barbara Steele stars in Antonio Margheriti aka Anthony M. Dawson's creepy and beautiful gothic horror movie about witchcraft, guilt, and revenge.

Italian black-and-white horror at its best. Darkness, candles, scary stairways, catacombs, coffins...! With some fantastic imagery and a tragic story that leads to a spectacular, bitter end, it's a must watch for fans of vintage gothic horror films.

Streaming Kino: The Revenge Of Frankenstein (1958) - Peter Cushing, Terence Fisher

The first sequel to Hammer films' successful "Curse Of Frankenstein" (1957), also directed by Terence Fisher, and equally entertaining.

"The Revenge Of Frankenstein", featuring Peter Cushing, Francis Matthews and Eunice Gayson, continues the story of Baron Frankenstein's attempts to create life, and expands it here and there. It's a classic of horror cinema just like its 1957 predecessor, with a great performance by Peter Cushing, nice British understatement, dedication to detail, precise direction, and some exciting scientifically (in)correct monster moments. Beautiful, creepy Hammer horror!

Streaming Kino: The 39 Steps (1935) - Alfred Hitchcock

One of grandmaster Alfred Hitchcock's earlier movies - and a real fun one.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - or maybe it's in the hands of the creator. Alfred Hitchcock has basically created beautiful movies throughout. Some might be a little more on the dark side, but all of them are charming, interesting, and exciting. "The 39 Steps" is a great mystery thriller that's more on the bright side of life, and it just oozes hitchcockian pep, natural charm, and suspense. Some of the more improvised looking scenes will probably put a particularly broad smile on your face.

Streaming Kino: Carnival Of Souls (1962)

Herk Harvey's only feature-length directorial work is a weird, obscure little gem, that has gained a little cult following over the years. 

It's about Mary, who has a car accident that changes her life... It's a unique low-budget movie that maybe has a little flaw or two in storytelling, but also has "creativity!" and "vision!" written all over it. Its undead-ish modern-day "monsters" and occasional expressionist visuals predate some of the ideas seen in George A. Romero's "Night Of The Living Dead" (1968), and were influential on a number of filmmakers. The otherworldly mood of "Carnival Of Souls" is pretty much unmatched to this day. If you're a horror film geek, or film historian, it's a must-watch anyway. If you're not, just let yourself sink into the carnival, and enjoy the chills!

Streaming Kino: Jack The Ripper (1988)

One of many adaptations of the "Jack the Ripper" material, this one stands out with great acting performances, suspense, and historical accuracy.

Michael Caine and Jane Seymour star in this two-part TV mini-series, turned into one 3-hour feature film. Do not despair at the runtime, you probably won't even notice the extra 90 minutes - it's a TV-friendly production, but still a very exciting ride. Some obvious effort went into creating a reasonably accurate picture of both the crimes, and the period. It's a captivating detective story, with flashes of horror, and some interesting character development.

Streaming Kino: Assault On Precinct 13 (1976)

John Carpenter's first serious feature length movie, and a horror thriller classic.

With its nihilistic approach, violent action, and seriously creepy scenes of nightly onslaught, "Assault On Precinct 13" is a little too much horror to be just an ordinary thriller. Like a handful of other John Carpenter films, its based on an idea found in a Howard Hawks western movie, but it also takes a clue from George A. Romero's "Night Of The Living Dead" (1968). The result is an outstanding piece of eerie, terrifying atmosphere and suspense, that is easily on par with Carpenter's next movie, mega-hit "Halloween" (1978), if not superior.

Streaming Kino: Riki-Oh ("Story Of Ricky", 1991)

Comic-adaptation "Riki-Oh" is a guilty pleasure that doesn't give you much time to catch your breath.

It's a cult movie, thanks to its unapologetic approach to both adapting the original material to live action film, and the on-screen violence. Where others might have changed the tone, director Lam Nai-Choi ("The Seventh Curse") chose to closely mimic the original, only with actors, latex, styrofoam, and large amounts of fake blood. 

"Riki-Oh" is a fast moving manga-style prison drama, with grotesque, funny, bizarre moments, and a lot of very brute, very gory violence. If you have a strong stomach, it's a highly entertaining watch.

Fun fact: Actors Fan Mei-sheng and Louis Fan Siu-wong, playing the master of the prison and Riki-Oh, respectively, are father and son in real life.

Streaming Kino: Quien puede matar a un nino? ("Who can kill a child?", 1976)

Don't even think about it. Or would you like to imagine how to kill a child?

That doesn't sound like a very pleasant idea. Thankfully, "Quien puede matar a un nino?" examines the subject only on a superficial level - otherwise it would probably be unwatchable. But that certainly doesn't mean it's a boring movie. Quite the opposite, in fact. It's creepy, scary, a little surreal, and still easily provocative enough to make you choke here and there. Unique, awesome horror classic from Spain!

Streaming Kino: Threads (1984)

No one will be spared. Nuclear holocaust isn't for the faint of heart.

"Threads" is a devastating, and highly realistic, depiction of what the effects of a nuclear exchange between the superpowers might look like. It's a masterstroke of shock-therapy, the ultimate horror that humankind is capable of, put on film without any comic or romantic relief. Regardless if you watch it just for the thrills - it will teach you a lesson, or two.

Streaming Kino: Demons ("Shura", 1971)

More darkness would mean just black frames throughout: "Demons" is the scariest samurai movie ever made.

In mesmerizing black and white images, at a slow pace, it tells a simple story of betrayal and revenge, in a traditional Japanese setting. But beware, once the abyss has opened, "Demons" goes all the way. It's a nightmare of pain and rage, put on film in the most elegant ways. Hauntingly beautiful and shockingly dark - masterclass cinema!

Streaming Kino: Shock Waves (1977)

Ken Wiederhorn's super chilling Nazi zombie classic, featuring Brooke Adams in a major, and the legendary Peter Cushing in a minor role.

Very creepy 1977 movie "Shock Waves" wasn't the biggest success on initial release, but has since become a cult classic, and quite rightfully so. It's grindhouse cinema at its best. Exploitative, speculative, low-budget, gritty, bleak. The focus is less on the big action, but more on the nightmarish, claustrophobic situation of being trapped on a island, desperately trying to escape inevitable doom. 

As you can see in the preview picture, the undead Nazi soldiers look amazingly ghoulish. "Shock Waves" has a unique atmosphere, and is probably best watched late at night. If possible, the night before you take a boat trip to an island.

Streaming Kino: The Crazies (1973)

Bring your body bags: George A. Romero's chilling vision of the TRIXIE virus disintegrating society, and humankind eliminating itself.

The gritty original "The Crazies" movie from 1973 is a low-budget production with a big scope. The similarities to the later, and more dynamic "Dawn Of The Dead" (1978) are obvious. But "The Crazies" is more realistic, as there are no undead, and it creates an even bigger picture of how humankind handles the catastrophe.

A cult classic of virus outbreak-horror, "The Crazies" is an analytic dissection of social mechanics under extreme stress, and a template for many zombie movies to come. It's not a perfect production, but still a highly thought provoking and exciting thriller - essential viewing!

Streaming Kino: L'Inferno (1911)

Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy" is an essential piece of literature that has inspired countless other works. The first cantica (section, "song"), titled "Inferno", has been adapted many times in film. The 1911 version, directed by Francesco Bertolini, Adolfo Padovan, and Giuseppe De Liguoro, is the earliest of them.

If you're new to very old films, you'll be surprised by the richness and boldness some of these silent, black-and-white movies put on screen. "L'Inferno" was a big production, and a financial success. It's an important piece of film history, but also an impressive depiction of the underworld. Moral standards and technical possibilities were a little different back in the early 20th century, cinema was in its infancy, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's a lot of holding back. 

To this day, the imagery in "L'Inferno" is stunning, with beautifully decorated sets, strong use of light and shadow, inventive camera tricks and picture composition, and most of all an - obviously - far more traditional understanding of the rules and appearance of good and evil. It's more of a fresco on a church wall come alive, than the dynamic rush of modern horror movies. All of that combined makes "L'Inferno" an interesting, mesmerizing, and actually pretty creepy watch, both for the historian, and the horror geek. Maybe even for the casual viewer, who will be enlightened by its unfamiliar, sweet bizarreness.

Streaming Kino: "The Corpse Can't Play" (1968) - The "lost" episode of "Late Night Horror"

"Late Night Horror" was a short lived British BBC horror TV series, released in 1968. We don't know a lot about it - but it appears to have been just too nasty for public viewing. 

Among the writers for the series are Richard "I Am Legend" Matheson and Roald Dahl, which gives us an indication of the tone, and quality the series had. But reception was mediocre, viewers complained - and in a surprisingly bold move, it seems as if the entire series was simply deleted, gone forever. 

We don't know why precisely this happened, but, thankfully, the tides of time helped give us another clue to what the series was like: In 2016, a black and white copy of one episode was found, namely "The Corpse Can't Play", written by John Burke.

In that sense, "lost" episode is nonsense. In fact it's the exact opposite, with, sadly, all of the other episodes still being lost. Which makes this "found" episode an even rarer, more valuable piece of media. 

So here it is, the only surviving episode of "Late Night Horror". And, well, if this episode is representative for the entire series, then maybe you'll agree: Ohyeah, it is quite nasty indeed. You can't show this to your kids. Or can you? In 1968? Did this create serial killers roaming the streets?

We don't know. But we can assume it didn't. Of course mothers, and probably some fathers, had to intervene: Kids, by no means even think of trying this at home! But English literature always had a good amount of black humor and the macabre. Maybe the series took it a tad too far for a general TV audience, but it's still somewhat within British educational shock-therapy culture ("The War Game" (1960), "Threads" (1984), ...).

If you like the stories of Roald Dahl, but always wanted them to be a tad more "horror", then "The Corpse Can't Play" is absolutely for you. For real horror geeks, the found episode is a great piece of film history - and quite an enjoyable one.

Streaming Kino: Firecracker (2005) - Karen Black, Mike Patton

"Firecracker" is a little gem, directed by Steve Balderson, that is based on some real life murder case from the 1950s, and has a couple of similarities with pre-code shocker "Freaks" (1932). It's also starring horror queen Karen Black, and, in a surprisingly credible role, Faith No More singer Mike Patton. The movie won a good round of prizes at fan festivals, and got rave reviews. But it's still remarkably unknown, which is a shame.

Due to movie piracy, the director decided to put the full movie on his YouTube channel.

It's time this dreamy, moody masterpiece gets some proper recognition. Watch it, head over to the director's channel, like it, share it, subscribe, comment, get him the clicks - "Firecracker" deserves a million views. Thank you, Mr. Balderson, it's an outstanding movie!

Streaming Kino: The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) - Roger Corman, Jonathan Haze

Issue seven of "Streaming Kino": Corman's classic comedy featuring a man-eating plant.

Roger Corman was very good at making quick money with a nice movie - in case of "The Little Shop of Horrors", he reused some sets of his previous production, A Bucket of Blood, and filmed it in only a couple of days. The result is hard proof that time and budget doesn't necessarily equal quality - creativity, charm, and willingness, on the other hand, does.

Written by Charles B. Griffith, "The Little Shop of Horrors" is a very witty and funny film indeed. Upon release, it didn't have too much of an impact, but over the years grew a cult following - and spawned a stage production, another movie, and even a little animated TV series.

This man-eating plant certainly has left its mark on pop culture. "The Little Shop of Horrors" features Jack Nicholson in an early role.

Streaming Kino: Dementia 13 (1963) - Francis Ford Coppola

Issue six of "Streaming Kino": Francis Ford Coppola's early shocker about a heritage, gaslighting, and multiple deaths.

When Francis Ford Coppola was in Corman-school, roughly ten years before his epic "Godfather" movie, he was ordered to create a low-budget thriller that would be able make some easy money from the success of films like Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and Robert Aldrich's "What ever happened to Baby Jane?". And so he did - putting every stylistic ingredient known from such movies into "Dementia 13", and generously adding some extra flavor here and there. The result is a wild, and very psycho, thriller, that is considerably less polished than "Psycho", but in terms of creativity and anarchism has a lot in common with for example "Evil Dead" or "Braindead". 

For fans of dark, crazy thrillers, "Dementia 13" is a must see and highly enjoyable to watch, and for fans of Francis Ford Coppola it is an important piece of film history, being Copolla's first feature directing work.

Streaming Kino: Night of the Living Dead (1968) - George A. Romero, Duane Jones

The groundbreaking, genre-defining zombie movie that has set the mark for all zombie movies to come.

A study of social psychology, a picture of its time, a pioneer in gore cinema, and an overall exciting and scary movie, "Night of the Living Dead" is still and will probably forever remain in the top five of the genre.

Streaming Kino: The Satanic Rites Of Dracula (1973) - Lee, Cushing, Coles

A secret service agent narrowly escapes the deadly rituals of worshiping the devil, and based on the evidence so far, Scotland Yard decides to consult occult expert Van Helsing...

"The Satanic Rites Of Dracula" is a later entry in the Hammer/Lee/Cushing series of Dracula films, and it might not come across as an overly "typical" episode, but it still looks absolutely Hammer, only with motorcycles and tape reels. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing are in it, a couple of other familiar faces, and as all Hammer Draculas, it's a solid production in all regards. Chilling and entertaining, "The Satanic Rites..." can easily be recommended to all horror movie fans, and of course is a must see for everyone who likes vampires and the Hammer Dracula series.
